into the black

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Mighty Shiny it is!  For all of us Firefly fans out there (the number grows everyday it seems), there is a project that I just found out about, and that I figured had to share.  I would say a new project, but it’s been around for a while now, whilst in the works.  It’s a fan film, based on the Firefly world or genre.  Now, they don’t attempt to recreate the Firefly and Serenity we all know and love, along with all of our Big Damn Heroes, but instead tell the tales of a different crew and ship, and their journeys.

I have only seen a couple trailers, they don’t have the whole film out yet, but it looks like they went to a lot of trouble to build sets and get some CG going for ship flying sequences and such.  Joss himself supports the effort, and I hear tell that our very own Captain Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) even donated some coin to help the cause.  Mighty shiny indeed!

The movie they are working on is called “into the black”, and you can check out various images and clips at their website.  I think it’s looking like an entertaining flick, and it looks like it would be a blast to work on.  Maybe we will see more of these endeavors in the future!  Until next time, keep flying.

Server Outage

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

I doubt anyone noticed, but just in case I thought I would pop up a message here.  It seems that we had a catastrophic power failure with the PDU that feeds the row where our server is located in the datacenter where we host this server.  That means that from about 0830 to sometime around noon we were down while the electricians made repairs.  It happens, and the hosting company (ServerBeach) did a great job of informing us, keeping us updated and getting the problem fixed as quickly as they could.  They even posted pictures of the problems and after shots of the fix.  All in all, they have been a great company to host with.

Wow … Chinese Gold Farmers

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Ok, here is a really interesting (to me it was anyway) article on “Chinese Gold Farmers”. These are the folk that play games like World of Warcraft for hours on end to accumulate gold and items, only to have them sold for real money by the people they work for. Can you imagine playing games for a living? At first I thought it would be a cool thing, and then I read that they play for twelve hours a day, seven days a week! ={ Oh … my … ok, that would get old quick. Especially when I have to give the spoils of my victories to someone else.

Anyway, this is an interesting read, and it really gets into the life of these people that do this. I guess it beats factory work. Maybe.

I found this link on Slashdot, and had to be repetitive. Just in case you missed it, these are some old school ads for computer stuff, like 80MB of storage for under $12k, and your own personal mainframe. These are priceless, and really an amazing look at how far we have come in a few years. Sadly … I remember some of these things … :( I am getting old. LOL

Great free file manager for geeky folk like me

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

I found a nifty little utility today, and I had to share with everyone (yes, both of you!). It’s called FreeCommander and it’s a great file manager type application. It’s double paned, so copying files from one part of your PC to another is a snap, plus it’s got tons of features under the hood. I spent a few minutes tweaking the settings and was rather amazed at all the cool stuff in there. Best of all, like the name says, it’s free! Free for personal and commercial use. Donations are encouraged, but not required, although I think I will if I use it as much as I think I am going to. I bet this will be my Windows Exploder Explorer replacement unless I find some big problem whilst using it.

Anyway, I thought it was pretty cool, and wanted to pass it along. Enjoy!

*UPDATE*

Found another one, xplorer2, this one is a little slicker and a little different.  There is a free “lite” version and one you can buy.  I am playing with them both, not sure which one I like better.   Check it out …
